VIRGINIA’S FAIRFAX COUNTY CHOOSES PREMIER’S PROVEN, RELIABLE OPTICAL SCAN PAPER BALLOTING VOTING SOLUTION

Optical Scan Equipment Will Supplement County’s Legacy DRE System to Accommodate Growth in Voting Rolls

ALLEN, Texas – The Fairfax County, Virginia Board of Supervisors has selected Premier Election Solutions to provide optical-scan voting tabulators and related products and services to serve Fairfax citizens in elections beginning in November 2008.  Under the agreement, Fairfax County will acquire 240 of Premier’s AccuVoteŽ OS ballot scanners which will be used to supplement the County’s existing DRE system.  Beginning this fall, Fairfax voters will have a choice at the polls to cast their ballot on a paper optical scan ballot, or on the legacy electronic touch screen terminals.

The agreement expands Fairfax’s relationship with Premier, which has provided the county with optical scan tabulators for processing of absentee ballots. One of the industry’s most widely used voting systems, the fully auditable AccuVote OS is a proven performer, with some 25,000 units deployed nationwide, including statewide deployments in Alaska, Connecticut and New Hampshire.

Like election administrators throughout the country, Fairfax officials anticipate record setting voter turnout this fall, and the addition of the Premier optical scan ballot tabulators should reduce or eliminate long lines at polling locations in the November general election.  Fairfax is one of Virginia’s largest jurisdictions, with more than 646,000 registered voters.

With an optical scan voting system, citizens do not have to wait until a voting terminal becomes available.  Nearly an unlimited number of voters can be issued ballots after completing check-in, and scanning their completed ballots takes only a few seconds.

Premier president Dave Byrd said, “We are extremely pleased to expand our current relationship with Fairfax to provide precinct based optical scan voting as an option for Fairfax voters.  The AccuVote OS system has proven highly accurate and reliable in thousands of elections nationwide, and the addition of the optical scan option will add convenience and reduce wait times for Fairfax voters this November, and in subsequent elections going forward.”
